Coyote Cavern Productions

Coyote Cavern Productions begins its sixth year of providing high quality youth theatre to the Calavera Hills community. Under the leadership of Director, Katie Gardner, and the support from the Kids Are Worth a Million Fund-Raising Committee of the Carlsbad Education Foundation, students in grades 3-8 have performed in such musicals as The Wizard of Oz, The Music Man, Anniejr. Once Upon a Mattress, Hello, Dolly, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This year's production of Beauty and the Beast is sure to continue the proud history of musical theatre at Calavera Hills Elementary and Middle Schools.

Meet the Masters

Meet the Masters has been a part of CHE's instructional art program for the past several years. Each month, an in-depth study of a specific artist allows students to learn and practice the standards for visual arts through a variety of media. Oil pastels are used to create beautiful Edgar Degas-like dancers; chalk and pen are used to paint western landscapes reminiscent of  Frederick Remington; and, black tempera "ink" became the medium for Chinese bamboo drawings of Katsushika Hokusai.

Supported in full by our PTA, parent volunteers are needed for each classroom. Your commitment is two hours per month- one for training, and more fun, one to teach students art in the classroom. If you are interested in becoming an art vlunteer, please contact our Meet the Masters chairperson, Krystie Whillock at 224-0882 or kwhillock@roadrunner.com.

School Garden

A new project this year on campus is the creation of our school garden. Working collaboratively with the Master Gardeners of San Diego, we are looking to create a beautiful oasis to serve as a living lesson at Calavera Hills for all grade levels.

Parent and/or community gardeners are welcome to become a part of this exciting venture and may contact Mrs. Harden for more information. We will be creating our master plan, clearing the land, and planting within the next few months. We would love to have you join us!

Recycling

Started last year, our Recycling Program has two goals: first, to make our students good stewards of our environment, and second, to raise funds which go back into activities and programs on our campus.

Each Tuesday has been designated Recycle Tuesday, and students are encouraged to turn in their plastic bottles, aluminum cans, batteries, and ink carttridges. Students receive stickers for each weekly donation and are rewarded at weekly assemblies with reuseable bags, Tshirts, and special events.

For more information about our Recycling Program, please contact our chairperson, Julie Benner.
